Hockey is a game of ball and stick which was first played in England in 19th century, It is the oldest the word Hockey was obtained from the French word hocquet, or shepherd’s crook, and refers to the stick which is used to hit a small ball.
It is a type of sport where the players try to get points by simply hitting a small object into other team’s goal point with a stick. It is an outdoor game played by a team members of 11 field players. In hockey players strikes an object into the other team’s goal with a stick to get points.
Hockey is played three different ways:
- Field hockey:
Field hockey is played with a ball on grass. Each teams have 11 players. It is played outdoors, but there is an indoor field hockey sport also. It is an Olympic Game played in summers.
- Ice hockey:
Ice hockey is played on ice. Each team have 6 player. Players have to wear ice skates. They have to strike a hockey puck into the other team’s goal. There are 6 players in each team. It can be played indoors or outdoors. It is a Winter Olympic played Game.
- Roller hockey:
Roller hockey is an indoor game played on a roller hockey rink. In roller hockey each team have 5 players. Players on each team wear roller skates. They hit a hockey puck into the other team’s goal.
In Hockey there are three periods each of twenty minute. At the end of the third period if the score is tied, there may be a shootout or an extra period to decide which team has won. When a team scores a goal, they got one point. The team having the highest goals at the end of the game is announced as the winner.
DEVELOPMENT BY BRITISH
Blackheath Hockey Club, was the first hockey team dating back to 1861. The Probationer Hockey Association was then formed in London in 1886, before workers and the military took the game to the four corners of the British Empire. Hockey became an Olympic sport in 1908.
Three Most important Rules in Hockey:
- Off sides: When any member of the attacking team before the puck over the opposite team’s blue line.
- Offside Pass: When a player passes the puck to a teammate from his defending zone beyond the red center line is Offside Pass
- Icing: When a player hit the puck across the center red line and cross the opposite team’s red goal line. If any of the teammate of the player hitting the puck touches it before a player from the opposite team, the defending goalie touches the puck first or if the puck comes along the crease (semicircle of blue paint at the mouth of the goal) on its path to the red line.

- Minor Penalty:
Minor penalty is of two minutes m Called for, charging, boarding, cross-checking, interference, high-sticking, elbowing, holding, hooking, roughing, and tripping, slashing, spearing, and unsportsmanlike conduct.
- Major Penalty:
Major Penalty is called for fighting or when minor penalties are committed with deliberate intent to injure. Major penalties for butt-ending, slashing, spearing, high-sticking and cross-checking carry automatic game misconducts. It is of five minutes.
Misconduct is called for various forms of unsportsmanlike behaviour or when a player incurs a second major penalty in a game. Its ten minutes
- Delayed Penalty:
Delayed Penalty is when the penalized team regains possession of the puck till then the whistle is delayed
